Hay River to receive the North’s best network technology. Introducing Fibre to the Home.

June 26, 2019

Hay River, NWT – This summer, Northwestel is bringing the North’s best network technology to Hay River, Northwest Territories (NWT) by installing new Fibre to the Home (FTTH) service throughout most of the community.

Fibre to the Home will allow Northwestel to improve internet services in Hay River in 2020, increasing available internet speeds and monthly data usage. Hay River customers currently have access to DSL Internet, with the highest available speed of 15 Mbps. The technology will also allow Northwestel to introduce TV service into the community.

While Northwestel has previously completed smaller FTTH pilot projects in Whitehorse, this will be the company’s first plan to deploy the technology across an entire northern community. Northwestel is installing Fibre to the Home in Hay River as a pilot project to assess the economic feasibility in the northern market.

“Hay River is the second largest NWT city. Now with these significant investments, Northwestel will ensure that the community can receive telecommunications services on par with other large Northern population centres,” says Northwestel President Curtis Shaw. “This year we celebrate 40 years of Northwestel innovation in the North. Adding Fibre to the Home in Hay River is a milestone achievement worthy of that celebration.”

Over the coming months, Northwestel and project partner Valard Construction will be working in Hay River to replace existing network equipment and connect new fibre-optic lines directly to people’s homes. The ambitious plan will see local network infrastructure in Hay River upgraded to connect with more than 90% of homes in the community.
