Northwestel celebrates 40th anniversary with THANK YOU to the communities it serves

April 17, 2019
Whitehorse, YT -
Northwestel is celebrating 40 years of connecting Northerners. Today, Northwestel celebrated by giving back, with employees volunteering at the Whitehorse Food Bank and donating $4000.

Incorporated as a northern telephone service provider in 1979, Northwestel now serves more than 90 northern communities with solutions such as high-speed Internet, digital TV, distance e-learning, 911 capability, and a range of business telecommunications services. Northwestel President Curtis Shaw notes that communications in the North have evolved at a tremendous pace over the past 4 decades.

“We’re celebrating this milestone by saying thank you to the communities we serve,” says Shaw. “After 40 years, we are still so proud to be working together to build a stronger North that helps people connect. I want to say thank you to our employees, to our partners, and to our customers.”

To thank its customers, Northwestel is offering special 40th anniversary promotions with up to 40% off on select TV and phone services. More information about Northwestel’s 40th anniversary celebration is available online at nwtel.ca.

Whitehorse Food Bank Executive Director Tristan Newsome was on-hand to receive the special donation from Northwestel today. Newsome explained how donations like this are crucial to keeping the Food Bank stocked up.

“The Whitehorse Food Bank relies almost entirely on volunteers,” says Newsome. “Volunteers donate hundreds of hours a month to our Food Bank and we simply wouldn’t exist without them. Thankfully we have organizations like Northwestel and their awesome staff supporting us.”

“Many of our more than 500 northern employees spend their time volunteering with local community groups,” Shaw explained. “In celebration of our 40th anniversary, Northwestel will match our employees’ volunteer time with donations toward the group they volunteer with. It’s just one way that we want to give back and say thanks.”

Northwestel plans to announce similar contributions to community non-profit organizations in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut in the coming weeks. News updates and announcement details will be available online at nwtel.ca.
