Northwestel completes 2022 fibre projects, with over 80% of Yukon and NWT households now able to access high-speed unlimited Internet

Whitehorse YT, Yellowknife NWT, December 7 2022 – Northwestel marked the completion of its 2022 fibre-to-the-home projects with community celebrations in Burwash Landing and Haines Junction, Yukon.  These are two of 17 Yukon and NWT communities that received fibre-to-the-home service in 2022 through Northwestel’s Every Community Project, including the Whitehorse areas of McPherson, Ibex Valley and Hidden Valley.

Over 80% of Yukon and NWT homes now have access to unlimited high-speed Internet that meets or exceeds the CRTC’s universal service objective of 50/10 Mbps unlimited service.  The majority have access to the North’s fastest home Internet, up to 500 Mbps download.  This marks a significant expansion in Internet access since 2019, when zero households in Canada’s Far North met the CRTC standard.  Most communities at the time only had access to 15 Mbps home Internet.  These improvements were a result of Northwestel’s own significant investments and funding from the CRTC Broadband Fund.

18 more communities are slated to receive fibre-to-the-home service in 2023.  Yukon in-community fibre assets will be owned by 13 Yukon First Nations through the Shared Pathways Network.

Fast Internet technology, backed by people who care.
Northwestel’s reliable fibre connections deliver the fastest speeds in the North, up to 500 Mbps.  Customers can also add Northwestel TV Plus and are eligible for a $20/month bundle credit on their Bell Mobility plan for 24 months.

Trained technicians will install service right to the home.  All Northwestel services are backed by people who care, with on-the-ground technicians in 38 northern communities and northern-based technical support available over the phone or at chat.nwtel.ca.

The company is highlighting its Northern technicians and their work keeping neighbours connected in it’s holiday advertising campaign: “Fast Internet technology and hearts that don’t freeze”.

"Fast unlimited Internet gives families and residents access to more healthcare, education, and job opportunities and better opportunities to share with each other.  The entire Northwestel team is so proud to be bringing the Yukon and the NWT closer to being some of the most connected places in Canada.”   Tammy April, Northwestel Vice President of Customer Experience.
