Iqaluit, NU - Today, Northwestel showed its commitment to Iqaluit families by pledging $75,000 in support of the Iqaluit Aquatic Centre. The company announced its 5-year partnership today with the City of Iqaluit during a special art unveiling ceremony at the Aquatic Centre.

“Northwestel is proud to partner with the Aquatic Centre to support the health of and well-being of Iqaluit families. This state-of-the-art facility provides Iqaluit residents with a place to play, to exercise, and spend leisure time with family and friends,” says Paul Gillard, Northwestel’s Vice President of Business Markets. “We were so fortunate to be able to work with such a talented local artist to really bring this sponsorship to life.”

Northwestel commissioned artist Jon Cruz and local Inuit artist Dayle Kubluitok to create visual art for the new Northwestel Multi-purpose Room, visible from the pool area. The mural, inspired by Nunavut’s strong connection to the ocean, was applied using environmentally friendly materials.

“It’s important as artists to help the next generation and pass the knowledge we’ve learned from our mentors,” explained Cruz. “It’s been a privilege to work with Dayle on this project, offering guidance to help bring her creative vision to life. Thank you to Northwestel for this unique opportunity.”

Northwestel’s partnership with the Aquatic Centre also includes sponsoring local youth to take part in swimming activities through the Jimmy Kilabuk Children’s Recreation Program.

“We welcome Northwestel as an important community partner. Not only will their generous sponsorship support the Aquatic Centre and its programs but will also provide a direct benefit to children and their families who need assistance in accessing the pool and swimming lessons,” says Amy Elgersma, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Iqaluit. “The Northwestel Multipurpose room is a community space that serves children, youth, families, businesses and government in Iqaluit.”
