3100+ northern students earn donations for their schools through Northwestel recycling challenge

WHITEHORSE, YT – The hard work of 3,130 northern students is being celebrated today as Northwestel announces the results of its annual Directory Recycling challenge. This spring, students from schools in all three territories and Northern British Columbia collected 7,052 directories for recycling.

Since 2002, Northwestel has been giving northern students the opportunity to earn cash donations for their schools by recycling old telephone directories. This year, the company awarded a total of $12,850 to participating schools.

“Northern students’ recycling efforts never fail to impress,” says Northwestel’s President Curtis Shaw. “During a difficult year learning from home and in the classroom, northern students and teachers showed their commitment toward building a greener tomorrow by diverting thousands of directories from the landfill. Northwestel is proud to continue celebrating and rewarding their success.”

Special recognition for top-earning schools

In addition to receiving donations for participating in the recycling challenge, bonus prizes were awarded to schools that collected the most directories in each region:

  • Joamie Ilinniarvik School in Iqaluit, NU, collected 354 directories.
  • Diamond Jenness Secondary School in Hay River, NT, collected 875 directories.
  • G.W. Carlson Elementary School in Fort Nelson, BC, collected 439 directories.
  • Johnson Elementary School in Watson Lake, YT, collected 1,272 directories.
