Nunavut Day is coming up on July 9th, and we are honoured to celebrate it together with the communities we exist to serve. Join us by participating in our annual Nunavut Day DIY Contest. Once again, we are excited to see the artistry, design, and ingenuity Nunavummiut put into their works of art.

This contest is your chance to share your creations. In the past, entries have included traditional carvings, jewelry, prints, and so much more. So, wherever your skills take you, we want to see how you fuel your creative passion.

Meet Kathleen McLean! Our 2023 Nunavut Day DIY contest winner.

Kathleen McLean, a lifelong Coral Harbour resident passionate about sewing, was the 2023 Nunavut Day DIY Contest winner. A mother of four, she began learning how to create with a needle and thread when her son was about to celebrate his first birthday, and her initial project was a parka.

In an interview following her 2023 contest win, Kathleen said she didn’t expect to claim the top spot: “I was super surprised. I’ve never really entered a contest like that before." She also noted that her sewing endeavours serve two purposes: passing the time and providing warm clothing.

“I sew so that my family will stay warm—and to keep busy,” she said, adding with a chuckle, “Although it’s not like I’m not already busy with a family of six.”

In addition to parkas, Kathleen makes amauti out of seal skins harvested by her mother during the winter months. For the unaware, amauti are traditional Inuit women’s coats that boast a pouch for carrying a baby or small child.

Beyond sewing, Kathleen enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, including caribou hunting and fishing. She also loves to bake and experiment in the kitchen.

I just use Google to find and try new recipes. Some turn out good, others not so good,” Kathleen laughed.

Kathleen’s dynamic lifestyle, which involves balancing family, work, outdoor adventures, and DIY hobbies, paints a picture of a vibrant and involved community member. Her life in Coral Harbour is rich thanks to the activities she’s engaged in, her embrace of the beauty of the land, and the warmth of family life.

Congratulations to Kathleen for winning the 2023 Nunavut Day DIY Contest!

Maybe this year, the winner will be you!*
