Inuvik artist wins Northwestel directory cover contest with stunning depiction of the Arctic Ocean.
March 28th, 2024, Yellowknife, NT - An Inuvik-based artist is the winner of Northwestel’s Directory Art Contest. Sehrish Khan’s artwork "The Ocean's Touch “is featured on the cover of the 2024 directory for the Northwest Territories.
Drawn to textile art, Sehrish has been artistic since she was a child. However, as life took its course and she began her next journey into motherhood, Sehrish's artistic pursuits took a backseat. The Northwestel Directory Art Contest presented her with an opportunity to reconnect with her artistic passions.
Her artwork was inspired by her family’s incredible trip to the Arctic Ocean, "The Ocean's Touch" showcases shades of blue, accentuated by the warm embrace of the sun. The focal point of the artwork is the shoreline scene, capturing the essence of that day spent in Tuktoyaktuk.
"I think visiting the Arctic Ocean was like a dream that we had not even dreamt of," she reminisced. "It's like we stole the idea off someone else's bucket list. We didn't know how special it would be for us."
As the selected NWT directory cover artist, Sehrish is awarded a prize of $5,000 from Northwestel.
Curtis Shaw, President of Northwestel, expressed his pride in supporting northern artists. "For 45 years, Northwestel has published rich northern art on the covers of our directories," Shaw stated.
