Open season for northern artists: 2025 Northwestel Directory Art Contest officially underway
September 12th, 2024, Whitehorse, YT – Northwestel has kicked off its 2025 Directory Art Contest and is inviting northern artists to enter now. The long-held tradition at Northwestel since 1979 has seen many artists grace our directories’ covers, including northern household names like Jim Robb, Tanya Tagaq, and Terry Pamplin. And this coming year, it could be you.
Every year, three artists are chosen, and their artwork is featured on their region’s directory cover. Winners are awarded $5,000 each and celebrated in an online campaign. Entrants must be current residents of Northwestel’s operating area—Nunavut, NWT, Northern BC, Northern Alberta or Yukon—who are of the age of majority in the province or territory in which they reside.
The art eligible for the competition includes two-dimensional originals, hand-rendered artwork (such as acrylic, oil, watercolour, silkscreen, etc.), digital visual artworks (such as digital painting, drawing or computer-generated still imagery), and three-dimensional works (such as sculptures and carvings).
“The Directory Art Contest is a really special opportunity for us to celebrate northern art and our communities. The program has become a treasured northern institution. It’s one of our favourite times of the year at Northwestel when we get to see all the incredible submissions roll in,” shares Tammy April, Vice President of Customer Experience at Northwestel.
Artists are invited to submit their entries now for consideration for the Directory Cover Art Contest. All submissions must be received by October 11, 2024, at 9:00 AM Pacific Time to be eligible, as late entries cannot be accepted due to production timelines. Each submission must include an official entry form with the artist’s name, contact information, a brief biography, and a description of the artwork, including its dimensions, medium, and title. A maximum of two entries per individual is allowed.
Winners will be notified by November 12, 2024. The three winners will be announced publicly in the spring of 2025. To learn more and to enter, visit https://www.nwtel.ca/community/sponsorship/directory-art-contest.
