Internet usage and data allowances

Internet usage is the amount of data that you send (upload) and receive (download) through your internet connection. Examples of sending data include sending email, sharing files and photos, and backing up data to the cloud. Examples of receiving data include getting email, browsing websites, watching Netflix shows, and streaming music.

We offer internet plans with unlimited data options and fixed monthly data allowances. Availability of internet plans varies by region.

For internet plans that have fixed monthly data allowances, keep the following in mind:

  • Data allowance is measured in gigabytes (GB) and is based on the calendar month, not your billing cycle.
  • If you exceed your monthly data allowance, overage charges apply based on the internet plan you have. You'll see the charges in the One-time charges section of your next bill.
  • Your monthly data allowance is reset at the start of each month. This means that any unused data for a given month isn’t carried forward or “rolled over” to the next month.

Use our Usage estimator tool to estimate how much data you need.

Certain activities, such as downloading videos, use more data than other activities, such as browsing websites. The tool gives you an idea of how much data is transferred through different activities.

In the tool, move the slider next to each activity to see your total estimated monthly usage. Use this information to help you choose or change to a plan that meets your needs.

Use our Usage report tool to track and monitor your data usage.

You can see how much data you’ve used over the current month, view your usage history over the last 12 months, and set up email notifications to alert you when you’re close to your monthly limit.

See Managing your internet usage for tips on how to control your usage to help avoid data overage charges.
