Tuktoyaktuk becomes northern-most community in Canada with fibre technology, as Northwestel brings fast, unlimited Internet.
October 4th, 2023, Yellowknife, NT - Today, Northwestel launched fibre Internet in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, making it the northern-most place in Canada to have in-community fibre technology. Customers in Tuktoyaktuk can now access high-speed, unlimited fibre Internet.
Community members can surf, stream and game with speeds of up to 50 Mbps in Tuktoyaktuk (up from 15 Mbps previously), all without worrying about their monthly data usage. Businesses can take advantage of more cloud services, faster document transfers, and more simultaneous video calls.
“We’re very proud to bring in-community fibre to the first Arctic Ocean community. Technology like this helps break down barriers to distance education, virtual health care and enables more participation in the global economy.” – Curtis Shaw, President, Northwestel
These fibre upgrades are part of Northwestel’s Every Community Project, a 3-year project to bring high-speed unlimited internet to 10,000 homes across the Northwest Territories and Yukon. The improvements are funded by the CRTC Broadband Fund as well as Northwestel’s own significant investments.
