Diver underwater with find

The story behind “S**t I Found Diving”

Bringing scuba into the spotlight

Meet Jeremy, the man behind the dry suit. An army man with a love for scuba diving in his heart. He arrived in the North on a three-year contract and stayed for the warm community and, well, the diving.

The story began like so many good ones, with a visit to a local pub. On this particular visit, Jeremy  stumbled upon the annual Northwestel Yellowknife Film Festival - Pitch Contest. He stepped up to the plate, wowed the judges, and emerged with his own TV show dedicated to a niche passion for a little-known northern sport – scuba diving.

Since 2015 Jeremy has built his northern diving enterprise by advertising  buried treasure found in the Yellowknife lakes. From lost purses to battleship anchors, his findings have grown an avid Facebook community who all share the love of found objects.  The locally produced show , follows Jeremy and his team as they travel around the NWT helping people recover their lost-to-the-water items.

Something found in the water

Beneath the surface, there’s a lot to learn

Scuba diving in our northern lakes takes a hardy type of character and the filming of the show is centered on the true realities of the North. There are no Hollywood stunt doubles or mission impossible, just risk assessments and safety briefings.

“When your toes start to tingle, it’s time to head up.”

The biggest challenge for the divers is often hypothermia. In the winter, the water temperature sits around 3 degrees Celcius. With the wind, shoots can sometimes take place at -40C. There are few tips to keep yourself safe and warm (namely involving pouring hot water in your dry suit). And despite the conditions, Jeremy admits his favourite time of year is still winter as there’s something magical about diving under the ice in crisp snowy wilderness.

Where to dive next?

For locals in Yellowknife, when you’ve lost something in the water, Scuba Guy is your man. As for the future of the series, Jeremy is looking to represent life in the north, for the people who live locally and for viewers worldwide who have a strong interest in travelling and scuba diving.

He wants to tell new stories and find authentic voices, looking to the past to retell lake legends that live on in community culture today. There’s also a possible supernatural spinoff in the works, investigating the stories of UFO sightings near Yellowknife back in the 60s. Whatever the future may hold, for northern scuba divers, there are always more lakes to explore and stranger things yet to discover.
