Inside wiring installation and repair
What's inside wiring?
Inside wiring (also known as house wiring) is the wiring between your phone jack and the point at which the Northwestel line leads to your home or place of business. The separation point between your inside wiring and the outside wiring is defined by a network interface device (NID). It’s usually a grey plastic protector box that’s installed on the outside of your premises. The NID contains a demarcation block. Northwestel is responsible for and provides service for the outside wiring up to the demarcation point, which is usually the demarcation block in the NID.
You’re responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance work of the inside wiring that runs from the demarcation block in the NID to your premises. Inside wiring must meet Canadian Electrical Code and Northwestel Terminal Attachment standards to ensure user safety and quality voice transmission.
Options for inside wiring installation and repair
You choose who will install, repair, and maintain the wiring, including jacks, inside your premises. If you’re not the owner of the premises, discuss your wiring requirements with the owner or property manager.
Have Northwestel do the work

After they complete the form, call us at 1 888 423-2333 for details on where to send it.
We’ll apply the house wiring and associated charges to the account of the phone number that’s being connected. You’re responsible for making payment arrangements for any inside wiring done for your phone number.
Do the work yourself
You can perform the inside wiring work yourself. See How to wire the inside of your home<ADDLINK: How to wire the inside if your home> for help with prewiring your home for phone service. You’ll also get helpful hints for how to find and repair existing phone wiring issues.
If you choose to install or maintain the wiring in your premises, you assume all risk of personal injury or injury to your contractor, damage to property, and loss of service. You’re also liable for correcting any service issues that result from inside wiring work you do that harms the Northwestel network. If a repair visit by a Northwestel technician is needed to remedy issues caused by defective house wiring, you must pay the service charge.
