How to restart your modem and router

What does restarting a modem and router do?

A restart is also called a “reboot” or “power cycle” because you turn the device off and on again. You do this by unplugging and plugging it back into its power source or pressing the On/Off or Power button (if the device has one). Restarting your modem and router clears out any errors that may have accumulated, which can be a quick and easy fix for certain performance or connectivity issues.

Important Restarting your modem and router isn't the same thing as resetting your modem and router. A restart means turning something on and off again. A reset erases any settings you chose and restores the device back to the factory default settings. Do not reset your modem unless you're instructed to do so by a Northwestel support representative.

  1. Unplug the power cord from your modem. Or, press the On/Off or Power button if your modem has one.
  2. Unplug the power cord from your router (if it’s a separate device).
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds for the modem to power off.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to your modem (not the router, if it’s a separate device). Or, press the On/Off or Power button if your modem has one.
  5. Wait for the modem to power on. This might take a few minutes.
  6. Check the modem lights to confirm your modem is online and ready. To do this:
    1. Go to our modem lights guide.
    2. Find your modem in the list, and then look in the Lights column to learn how the lights on your modem should appear when it’s online and ready.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the router (if it’s a separate device).
  8. Test your internet connection. In a web browser, go to nwtel.ca.

If restarting your modem and router doesn’t solve the issue, continue troubleshooting your internet connection.
