Troubleshooting phone issues using the network interface device

This article describes how to test your phone connection from the network interface device (NID) when you're troubleshooting an issue with your phone.

The NID connects your inside wiring to the Northwestel network. In other words, it’s the point between the inside wiring, which you’re responsible for, and the outside wiring, which Northwestel is responsible for.

You can use the NID to determine whether an issue is with the inside wiring or outside wiring. If it’s an inside wiring issue, you save the cost of having a Northwestel technician visit your home.

If you have a NID, you’ll find on an outside wall near your hydro line or meter. It’s usually a grey plastic box. To open it, loosen the screw and release the snap (as shown on the cover).

After you locate the NID, disconnect a phone that’s working, and then follow the instructions on the inside cover. Using the instructions, you can determine whether the issue is with your inside wiring or our network.

  • If your testing indicates the issue is with your inside wiring, you can decide whether to repair it yourself, hire a contractor, or have us do the work. To learn more, see Inside wiring installation and repair.
  • If your testing indicates the issue is with the outside wiring, call us at 1 888 423-3333.
