Celebrating International Women’s Day: Esther's passion for progress in Northern tech

For Esther Pelayo-Tibon, success is all about learning, collaboration and believing in yourself. We spoke with long-term Northwestel employee on barriers, success and advice for the next generation of women in tech. From optimism to innovation, learn how Esther’s passion for progress is leading the way.

A look to the future with excitement

A career in tech offers Esther the chance to work with optimistic people in a field that helps make life easier for many.  Her advice to other women, “Join the industry and enjoy all the opportunities it has to offer.”

“With constant changes in technology, there is always an unlimited opportunity to learn. So even if you’re not a “tech person”, if you have the interest, willingness to learn and are open to new ideas, I believe there is always an opportunity to advance your career in the tech industry. And enjoy the job security!”

Overcoming barriers and challenges

Esther is realistic about the challenges she’s experienced. She's not only overcome learning English as a second language, but also the feeling that she didn’t really belong in the tech industry. Like many women's experiences in the field- when she first started, she didn’t really think she was a “tech person.”

But in typical Esther fashion, she faced those challenges head on and isn’t looking back.

Working with leaders and teammates, Esther has grown her career from a temporary part-time position to being a full-time employee with over 8 years of experience at Northwestel. Her drive comes from continuously learning and applying her new skills to any role.

Through her passion for learning and collaboration, Esther gained the skills to thrive and overcome self-doubt. And she believes any young woman can too!

“Having knowledge and experience in the tech industry you can go anywhere.”
