Celebrating International Women’s Day: a thriving network of women in the North

For Hayley Shortt, it’s all about having a community of women to look up to and never limiting yourself. Our Business Care Center Manager shares the excitement and impact of leading a Northern team. From overcoming limiting beliefs to creating a community of inspiring women, learn how Hayley is leading the way.

The importance of representation

As a born and raised Yellowknifer she understands the long dark, winters and how easy it can be to feel isolated. That’s why she’s thrilled to work in an industry that keeps communities across the North connected.

But like many women entering this industry, it didn’t come without its challenges. At first Hayley was intimidated by this field as she felt she wasn’t really a “techy person.” Like so many women starting new careers, she had to overcome self-doubt and feeling like “I don’t think I can do this.”

Feeling confident in her role and thriving is all about having role models throughout the company.

“Even if it’s not someone you work with every day, seeing female representation at all levels of a company and knowing that you won’t be the only woman in a room when you walk in is essential. Seeing that women are excelling and succeeding, and having female role models is so important. I’m lucky to have so many.”

Connecting with the next generation

Hayley continues to build connections with women across the company to have a thriving network. Every day she works to create an environment where all women feel confident and comfortable having a seat at the table. She carries this enthusiasm to the next generation of women and is excited for their opportunities in a tech career. Her advice:

“Don’t sell yourself short. You can reach for big things, you just have to ask. As women we’re taught in our lives that we shouldn’t be asking for things and that’s wrong, just do it!”
