Celebrating International Women’s Day: mapping a new path forward for Northern women in tech

Confidence, knowledge and innovation are some of the keys to success for Rhoda Haruna. As the Implementation Manager of Geographic Information Systems, she is no stranger to working in a male dominated industry. Through building her skills, Rhoda leads with confidence and is excited to be a role model for the next generation of women in tech.

Leading with collaboration and confidence

Rhoda enjoys her job as it helps engage both her creative and logical mind to solve problems independently and within a team. The industry offers innovation and continuous opportunities to learn, but it also comes with its challenges.

“One challenge is sometimes people don’t take you seriously as a woman in tech and underestimate you. The key to overcoming this is to have the knowledge base and confidence in your skills. Don’t be discouraged, and don’t shy away from showing people that you can do this. Showcase your skills and tools you have, so when you go for an interview, you can confidently say this is what I can do.”

Inspiring the next generation

Rhoda is excited to see young women achieve more in tech. Although she didn’t have a female mentor to look up to while starting her career, she’s thrilled to fill this role along with her inspiring colleagues. As more women enter this field, her advice is to not shy away from asking for help and to start today! As she puts it:

“It is a rewarding career with endless growth and opportunities. Come let us code and use the in-demand tools in the tech industry to shape a better world.”
