Mount Sima

Mt. Sima goes live for the first time on Northwestel Community TV

It's not every day that Northwestel Community TV gets to live stream a world cup event. But last week on March 29th they did just that over the course of 2 days. The Lost in Paradise Snowboard Para-World Cup, hosted at Mount Sima, had spectators from over 15 countries tuned in to the live broadcast to cheer on their Para-athletes.

Shawn Jo, Northwestel’s Community Media Production Technician, expertly directed a crew of local operators resulting in over 3000 people tuning into the broadcast. It was a major success for the athletes to be able to share the sport that they’ve worked so hard on to friends and family.

We heard time and time again how important this coverage was to the athletes. Many have never been able to share their competitions to the world before.

– Mike Gravitis, Northwestel Community TV Executive Producer

Shawn explained that because this is the first time this type of coverage has been done, there were many unforeseen challenges that working on the side of a mountain presented to the crew. However, seeing the impact this broadcast had on so many made it a truly rewarding experience.

Despite the difficulties the operator crew was presented with, this Community TV experience offered an excellent opportunity to train industry players in the North for these types of circumstances. When other events come to town, such as the Arctic Winter Games, the crew will be ready.

“I want to thank the production team for an amazing show. The athletes were over the moon about the entire event and the fact that their families and friends could watch from across the world. For me, to see our little big hill on the world stage was more than I could have ever asked for. It was an amazing weekend, and we are so excited to see where we go next." – Sam Oettli, Mt. Sima GM
