Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.1 - End of support
Effective October 15, 2020, as part of our commitment to security and in alignment with industry best practices, we’ve disabled Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.1 across our solutions, including Webmail.
This means that the software you’re using must support TLS 1.2. This includes your computer’s operating system and web browser or email app, depending on how you access your Northwestel email.
This article gives you an overview of what TLS is, why we no longer use TLS 1.1, and how this change affects you.
TLS is a protocol that encrypts data that’s sent between apps over the internet to keep the data secure and private. It’s used for web browsers, email apps, and other apps that need secure delivery of data over the internet. The versions of TLS to date are 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3.
We’re committed to maintaining the highest security standards to ensure that you have access to the latest security protocols. TLS 1.1 and earlier versions are considered outdated and pose a security risk.
This change is a mandatory, industry-wide security update, affecting a wide range of software solutions, not just Northwestel Webmail.
We require that you use or upgrade your operating system, web browsers, and email apps to versions that support TLS 1.2 or later. If you don’t, you may not be able to access your email.
Here’s a list of operating systems, web browsers, and email apps that support TLS 1.2.

The following are some web browsers we know of that don’t support TLS 1.2. Upgrade your browser if you’re using one of the following.
- Android 4.3 and earlier versions
- Firefox version 5.0 and earlier versions
- Internet Explorer 8 to 10 on Windows 7 and earlier versions
- Internet Explorer 10 on Windows Phone 8
- Safari 6.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.8.4 and earlier versions
