How to check the speed of your internet connection
Want to test your internet speed? Use the Northwestel speed test usage tool to measure the speed of your internet connection.
For the most accurate results, connect your computer directly to your modem through an ethernet cable to run the speed test. We also recommend you disconnect all other devices from the internet before you run the speed test.
Step 1: Connect your computer directly to the modem
- Do one of the following, depending on whether your modem and router are one device or separate devices:
- If your modem and router are one device, connect one end of the ethernet cable to the ethernet port on your computer, and then connect the other end to the ethernet port on the back of the modem.
- If your modem and router are separate devices, disconnect the ethernet cable from the router, and then connect it to the ethernet port on your computer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- On the modem, check for a flashing amber light and a green light where the ethernet cable is connected.
- A green light means that the device senses a cable is connected to that port.

A flashing yellow light indicates that data is flowing, and that the connection is working.
Step 2: Run the speed test
- In a web browser, go to the Northwestel speed test usage tool.

Click Go to run the speed test.
The speed test gives you the download and upload speeds measured in megabits per second (Mbps). You can also click Copy link to get the link to the speed test results page.
If you want, you can compare the speed test results with the advertised speeds of your internet plan.
- In a web browser, go to the Northwestel internet plans page.
- Find the internet plan you have, and then take note of the advertised download and upload speeds. Compare the speed test results with the advertised speeds of your internet plan.
Note Download and upload speeds will vary depending on the distance between your modem and our switching equipment. Speeds may vary depending on how many devices you have connected at the same time, internet traffic, server, satellite transport, environmental conditions, and other factors.
