Troubleshooting noise on your phone line

If you hear noise such as crackling or clicking, static, or radio interference on your phone line, try the following:

  1. Make sure that all phones are connected correctly to the phone jacks.
  2. Make sure that any devices plugged in to your phone line are connected correctly. This includes answering machines, fax machines, modems, splitters, and so on.
  3. Check the phone cords to make sure they’re not damaged.
  4. Check whether this issue happens on one or all your phones.
    • If you have noise on only one phone, plug the phone into a different phone jack that you know is working. If the line is clear, the first jack may be the issue, and you should have it checked. If you hear noise, it could be an issue with that specific phone.
    • If you have noise on all your phones, go to the next step.
  5. Unplug all your devices from every phone jack. This includes phones, answering machines, fax machines, modems, splitters, and so on.
  6. Wait 60 seconds, and then plug in a basic corded phone.
  7. Listen for noise on the line. If the line is clear, plug in another device, and then listen again. If the line remains clear, plug in the rest of your devices one at a time, checking for noise on the line after each one.
  8. If the noise returns after you plug in a device, unplug it. That device may be causing the issue and you should have it checked or replaced.
  9. Test using the network interface device (NID).
