How to use Three-Way Calling

Three-Way Calling lets you set up a call with two other people. In a three-way call, you can talk to both people at the same time or talk to one person while the other person stays on hold.

  1. While you’re on a call with the first person or after you dial the phone number of the first person, let them know that you’ll be putting them on hold.
  2. Press the Link or Flash button or switch hook to put the first person on hold.
  3. Listen for three short tones.
  4. Dial the number of the second person.
  5. When they answer, press the Link or Flash button or switch hook to connect all three people on the call.

If the second person doesn’t answer or their line is busy, press the Link or Flash button or switch hook to return to the call with the first person.

Things to keep in mind

  • Before you make a three-way call, make sure that all your other phones are hung up properly. Three-Way Calling doesn’t work if another phone in your home is off the hook.
  • Three-Way Calling doesn’t work if Call Waiting<ADDLINK: How to use Call Waiting> is active. This means you can’t add a second person if you have an incoming Call Waiting call while you’re on the call with the first person.
  • If either the first or second person hangs up, you can still continue the call with the remaining person. When you hang up, the three-way call ends for everyone.

The person who starts a three-way call is billed for any long distance charges that apply.

Depending on where you live, either one or both people you add to a three-way call can be long distance. This capability depends on the switching equipment in your community.
