Understanding modems and routers

Northwestel provides wireless modems (which include a built-in router) and wired modems for internet service. In basic terms, a modem connects you to the internet and a router connects your devices to Wi-Fi.

Read on to learn more about modems, routers, and how they work.

A modem is a device that connects the internet to your home or place of business. You can connect your computer directly to a modem using an ethernet cable, which lets you connect to the internet on that computer through a wired connection. You can also connect a modem to a router, which broadcasts the signal within a certain distance and allows you to connect multiple devices to the internet through a Wi-Fi (wireless) connection.

Wireless modems

A wireless modem includes a built-in router. It connects you to the internet and broadcasts the Wi-Fi signal in your home or place of business, which allows multiple devices to connect. A wireless modem is also called a gateway.

We have several wireless modem options available, depending on whether you have DSL, Cable, or Fibre Internet service.

2.

Wired modems

A wired modem connects to your computer through an ethernet cable, which allows you to access the internet from that computer. We have several wired modem options available, depending on whether you have DSL or Cable Internet service.

If you want Wi-Fi capability, you’ll need a wireless modem (which you can rent from us, see above) or you can purchase a third-party wireless router. We don't provide wireless routers.

A router is a device that delivers the internet to other devices in your home or place of business. A router enables multiple devices to connect to the internet through one connection. A router can be a separate device or it can be combined together with a modem into one device.

When a router is combined with a modem into one device, it’s called a wireless modem or gateway.
