Troubleshooting when you can't make outgoing calls

If you can receive incoming calls but can’t make outgoing calls (even though you have a dial tone) or if your phone doesn’t respond to any keys you press, try the following:

  1. If you get a fast busy signal or if there’s a delay in receiving a dial tone, there may be a temporary surge in phone line usage in your area. Try your call again later.
  2. Try a different phone to see if the same issue occurs. If you can make an outgoing call, then the issue may be with the other phone.
  3. Make sure the phone is set to touch-tone dialing and not pulse dialing. Check the switch, which is usually at the side or bottom of your phone. If it’s set to pulse, change it to tone.

  4. Press each key on the keypad to make sure they’re not damaged or stuck.
