Troubleshooting no signal or a blank screen on your TV

This article steps you through what to do if you see a “No Signal”, “No Source”, or “No Output” message on your TV screen or if your TV screen is blank. This can occur if your set-top box is turned off (if you're a Digital TV subscriber), cables aren’t connected correctly, or your TV is using the wrong input setting.

If you have Digital TV, check to see if the power light on your set-top box is on. If you don’t see a light, press the POWER button on your remote to turn on the set-top box.

If you see a blank or black screen while you’re trying to watch NHL hockey, try switching to another show or channel. If you can view other shows and channels, the NHL hockey game you’re trying to watch is likely blacked out because of broadcast restrictions. Learn more about NHL blackouts.

  1. Unplug the power cord from your set-top box.
  2. Make sure the HDMI cable that connects your set-top box to your TV is attached securely at both ends.
  3. Make sure the coaxial cable that connects your set-top box to the cable wall outlet is attached securely at both ends.
  4. Plug the power cord back into your set-top box.
  5. Wait for your set-top box to restart and for the guide to load. This can take a few minutes.
  6. Test to see if the issue is resolved. If you’re still experiencing issues, go to the next step.

Check the input setting on your TV to make sure you’re using the correct one. Your set-top box connects to your TV through an input on the back of the TV. The input setting on your TV should match this input.

  1. Press the Input, Source, or TV/Video button on your TV remote.
  2. Repeat step 1 to cycle through the available inputs to select the correct input. The input setting you need depends on the type of cable that connects your set-top box to your TV.

For example, if you're using an HDMI cable, the input setting should be set to an HDMI setting such as HDMI1, HDMI2, HDMI3, and so on.

If the input setting on your TV is correct, go to the next step.

Restarting your set-top box can often fix many issues, including error messages and picture problems.

  1. Restart your set-top box.
  2. Test to see if the issue is resolved.
